Prepare in a Year 26: Meeting Places
Meeting places are where we gather to exchange information, gather resources, and make a plan. In some situations, they’ll be where we go to get first aid. They include your neighborhood gathering place (if you’ve mapped your neighborhood), the Child Reunification Center, the Severe Weather Shelter, and Disaster Hubs.
The Goal
The goal is to select meeting places or know where they already are. Your family should know where to meet up right outside your home in the event of a fire or earthquake. Your neighbors should know where you all will meet after a major disaster. You and your neighbors should know the location of your closest Disaster Hub. Everyone should know where the Child Reunification Center (Bainbridge High School) and Severe Weather Shelter (Senior Center) are located.
The Strategy
Select an outside meeting place for all members of the household.
Make sure everyone understands that in an emergency, if you need to evacuate outside, everyone should immediately go to the meeting place.
Practice evacuation. Ideally, practice when it is dark outside.
Know where the nearest two Disaster Hubs are located.

Team Player
Don’t go it alone. Work with your neighbors to map your neighborhood and select a post-disaster meeting place.
If you’re off island when an earthquake strikes, do you have a plan with a neighbor to pick up your kids from school or check on your elderly mother who lives in a memory care facility? Will that neighbor feed your pets who are at home?
