A disaster will likely make roads impassable. How will you move around the island to seek first aid, information, and other resources? If needed, how will you evacuate?

The Goal

The goal is to make sure you and your family can get around and get away when roads are blocked. Likely scenarios are storms, earthquakes, and wildfires.

The Strategy

  • Create a go bag with emergency supplies for evacuation.

  • Create a get-home bag with emergency supplies for getting back home.

  • If you have a vehicle, create a vehicle bag with emergency supplies for when you’re driving.

  • if you have a vehicle, don’t let your electric charge or fuel tank drop below 50 percent.

  • If you don’t have a vehicle, prepare for evacuation in another way: Make a plan for riding with a neighbor or keep cash on hand for a bus ticket, for example.

When a disaster occurs, the first thing people want to do is find out what happened, get a sense of what will happen, and make sure the people they care about are okay. This month we focus on communication.

The second most-important supply, after water, is food.

In a disaster, grocery stores will likely be closed for a while. But even if they are able to open, their supply will be cleared out quickly, and the disaster may make it impossible for stores to restock their shelves right away.
