Prepare in a Year 2025: Get 3 Weeks Ready at Home

Our Prepare in a Year program helps you get ready for disasters, like large-scale earthquakes that isolate us from outside help for weeks or longer. By tackling one simple task per month, you can get your household in good shape by the end of a year.

The task for May is to make sure your household is ready for a long emergency. Imagine a disaster that makes it impossible for outside help to reach your neighborhood for three or even four weeks.

The good news is you’ve been working on preparation for four months now so you already have some of the key supplies ready: food, water, and first aid supplies.

What to Gather

You will need to have enough stored water and food for everyone in your household, including pets. In addition, because the power is likely to be out during a large-scale emergency, you will need phone chargers, a lighting source, a heat source, a way to wash and cook, and a way to handle waste.

Additional considerations are shelter (like a tent and sleeping bags), first aid supplies, and personal protective gear like gloves and goggles.

Neighbors

Your best defense in an emergency is cooperation among neighbors. After taking personal responsibility for your own preparation, you can rely on one another for additional support and help for the unexpected.

Make sure your neighborhood is participating in the island’s Map Your Neighborhood program. If not, reach out to MYN team Co-Lead Ann Cook.
