BP Helps Camano Island Prepare

BP Founder and Board President Scott James “visited” Camano Island May 29 through an online presentation to share the Bainbridge Prepares Model with residents there. He was the guest of Camano Preparedness Group, an emergency readiness organization fashioned after BP. James was joined by Island County Department of Emergency Management Deputy Director Eric Brooks.

James emphasized the BP approach toward emergency preparedness through a lens of love rather than fear. He said, “If you go through fear, it will motivate folks. They will take action, but it does not stick. If you motivate them through love, it takes longer to get into their brain. It takes longer to get them to act, but then when they act, it actually sticks.”

As part of his presentation, James covered a range of topics from the Map Your Neighborhood program to Disaster Hubs to our local Flotilla to Child Reunification.

Although there are similar prearedness organizations in Coupeville, Camano, and South Whidbey, Brooks is working toward uniting the various preparedness efforts throughout Island County under the name Island County Prepares.

Bainbridge Prepares is developing a replication kit to support community organizers and emergency management professionals across North America—like those on Camano—to ready their communities for emergencies and develop resilience to weather disasters.
