Two office workers hiding under their desks during an earthquake drill

Tomorrow, October 16, is the Great ShakeOut, that one day every year on which we have the opportunity to share communitywide the experience of practicing for the biggest disaster we are likely to face here in the Pacific Northwest: The Big Earthquake.

At exactly 10:16 a.m. tomorrow is when the “earthquake” will start. At that time, drop whatever you are doing, seek cover under a solid piece of furniture, cover your head, and hold on (because in a quake, you might roll or shake right out from under your protection).

If you have children at home, practice with them.

If you have pets, try to get them under your heavy piece of furniture too.

When the shaking has stopped, at exactly 10:17 a.m., post your HELP/OK sign in your window, showing whether you are OK or need help. Then report to your neighborhood meeting place to check in on your neighbors.*

*Don’t have one of those? That means your neighborhood is unmapped. Reach out now to the Map Your Neighborhood Team Leads to get started.

If this were an actual event, at that time your neighborhood Captain would send

  • the Utility Coordinator and a team to shut off propane valves,

  • the Search & Rescue Coordinator and a team to check on the status of missing people,

  • the Triage Coordinator and a team to manage the first aid effort and determine who should be taken to the local Disaster Hub, and

  • the Communications Coordinator to take a status report to the Disaster Hub.

Find out if your neighborhood is participating in the Map Your Neighborhood program.
