Traveling Through Snow?
After our series of atmospheric rivers, we are now being gifted with blizzards in the Cascades and Olympics. Try not to travel through the mountain passes, but if you must then be sure to add these items to your vehicle:
Studded tires or snow chains
Water
Phone chargers
Flashlight
Emergency radio and batteries
First aid kit
Jumper cables
Seatbelt cutter/window breaker tool
Foldable, reflective warning triangle
Small, foldable shovel
Flares
A high-visibility vest
Snow and ice scraper
Emergency blankets
Hat and gloves
Cat litter, sand, or carpet remnants (for tire traction)
Bike safety flag (that you can zip tie to your roof rack or antenna in a snow storm to help people find you)
Zip ties
Precautions
Remember, do not fall asleep in your vehicle with your motor running. Snow can block your exhaust pipe leading to a buildup of deadly carbon monoxide in your vehicle.
Be sure to let someone know your route and when you are expected to arrive. If possible, share your location with them via phone. That way, they can alert emergency services to look for you.
Fill up (or fully charge) your vehicle before setting out. Don’t let your vehicle drop below a half tank (or half charge).
