What’s Emergency Food? Find out at Quake 'n' Bake!
Presented by the Food Resilience Team : A non-emergent emergency food tasting event with wine pairings, games, and demos.
The Quake ‘n’ Bake is a fun, food-tasting event hosted by the Bainbridge Prepares Food Resilience Team and Heyday Farm.
The Quake ‘n’ Bake Event
The idea for a disaster food garden party came about when Jim Kirk, a Food Resilience Team member, and Robin Orth, the proprietor of Heyday Farm, were discussing the fact that few people are familiar with freeze-dried foods, MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), and long shelf–life foods, the mainstays of stored emergency foods. Jim’s experience as a backpacker contributed to his curiosity and enthusiasm for storable food, turning the duo’s idea into a concrete plan.
Jim and Robin figured, if they could find a way to make the topic fun, then people would come and learn about the different types of emergency food. So they decided to combine food tasting with wine pairings, some games, and a lovely garden setting.
Having all of the key information in a takeaway tool led to the idea of the Emergency Food Book, which Carol Appenzeller, a Food Resilience Team Lead, drafted with Jim and which Sarah Lane (the Messaging, Media, and Engagement Team Lead) helped create. Attendees at the Quake ‘n’ Bake event will use the Emergency Food Book to record their personal tasting notes. Carol explained that “Jim’s initiative is the source of both the Q ‘n’ B event and the Emergency Food Book. The Food Resilience Team, of which John Fossett and I are co-leads, encourages islanders to store at least one month of food, but whether they are able to store one week or several months, we want to help them to ‘just do it.’”
Attendees at the Quake ‘n’ Bake event will learn how to match foods to their needs, including storage space, preparation effort, clean up, cost, and special diets.
By taking action to store food, we don’t just get a source of calories, but also a major source of safety, well-being, and freedom to pay attention to other needs in an emergency. Don’t forget food for your pets.
Quake ‘n’ Bake happens on September 20 from 12 to 4 p.m. at Heyday Farm, 4370 Old Mill Rd. Tickets are $10 for adults; children attend for free. Cider, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available. Get your tickets now.
We hope to see you there!
