Fight Turberculosis with . . . Poetry!

On Saturday, Partners in Health (PIH) continues its fight against tuberculosis (TB) with an event—Partners in Poetry—at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Despite being curable since 1944, TB kills one human every 20 seconds. All proceeds from Saturday’s event will go toward Partners In Health tuberculosis prevention and treatment programs in nine countries.

Partners in Poetry features a lineup of local poets including youth sharing art on the meaning of community justice. Included are

  • Seattle Youth Poet Laureate Janae Lu,

  • Auburn Laureate Mateo Acuña,

  • Slam artist Troy Osaki,

  • Former BI Laureate Michele Bombardier, and

  • other artists.

The event also features music and drinks.

Partners in Poetry happens May 24, Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. BIMA is located at 550 Winslow Way E. Tickets are by donation: $25 covers two weeks of food for a TB patient, and $10 covers the cost of one lab test to diagnose TB.

PIH was founded in the 1980s. Founders Jim Yong Kim, Paul Farmer, and Ophelia Dahl changed the course of the health equity movement when they treated patients with HIV/AIDS and MDR-TB in rural settings that lacked access to health care—in Haiti, Peru, and Rwanda. In so doing, they developed a revolutionary model of training community members as health workers so as to treat all people with world-class medicine.
