Severe Weather Shelter
The Severe Weather Shelter Team’s goal is to provide vulnerable populations in the community with temporary shelter during extreme heat and extreme cold events.

The Severe Weather Shelter Team is dedicated to ensuring vulnerable populations have a safe place to go for temporary shelter during extreme cold and extreme hot temperatures.
About the Team:
The SWS Team is trained deploy in the event of extreme temperatures to operate one or more weather shelters, providing a climate-controlled environment, limited food, limited water, and restrooms.

The SWS Team works closely with the City’s Emergency Manager to make sure shelters are stocked and will be staffed during a weather emergency. The team trains for and practices operating the shelters.

During activation, the SWS Team reports to the Severe Weather Shelter and prepares it for guests. The team then opens the doors and manages the shelter in shifts until it has been deactivated by the Emergency manager.

The team is activated at the direction of the Emergency Manager during extreme hot and cold events.

For non-emergency support requests, contact the Team Lead. To receive shelter services, monitor Nixle alerts; when the shelter is activated, show up at the front doors.

The team needs volunteers with experience and/or interest in working with vulnerable populations.
