Prepare in a Year 2024: In May Gather Important Documents

You can prepare your household for emergencies in one year by taking a few small steps each month.

Join the Prepare in a Year 24 movement to get ready AND enter monthly drawings to win prizes.

The task for May is to gather important documents. The idea is to make sure you have these documents ready if you need to evacuate. During a disaster is not the time to try to think through the paperwork you will need. Will you need to file an insurance claim? Will you need to apply for financial assistance? Will you need to find new housing? Will you need to leave the country? Will you need to get advanced medical care? These considerations will require quick and easy access to documents that could be inaccessible after a disaster or destroyed by it.

Follow these steps:

  1. Make copies of all your important documents. Read more here about the types of documents to consider. You might choose to store a thumb drive as well—remember that having hard copies might be more useful when the power is out and you don’t have access to a computer.

  2. Store them in a fire-safe container. Include the filled container with your go bag (April) for evacuation.

That’s it! When you’re done, complete the submission form.

Your submission will be entered in a drawing to win the May prize: a fireproof, water-resistant DocSafe document bag with lock

Want the chance to win more prizes? Keep track of your monthly prep activities using the Prepare in a Year 24 Passport. If you complete at least 10 of the 12 activities, you’ll be entered to win the Grand Prize.
